Joseph Lawrence Sax (February 3, 1936 - March 9, 2014) was an environmental law professor, known for developing the public trust doctrine. After a few years in private practice and at the Department of Justice he began teaching, first with the University of Colorado in 1962 and then at the University of Michigan in 1965. He joined the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 1986. Environmental and conservation law were central to Sax's career from early on. He worked with the Sierra Club in Colorado and drafted Michigan's environmental law (called the "Sax Act").
